In the latest update to Windows 11, Microsoft has intensified its restrictions on creating local accounts, a move that has stirred frustration among users. The necessity to sign in with a Microsoft account has been a consistent annoyance for many since the operating system's launch. While account sign-ins are a common requirement across various platforms, the increasing difficulty in bypassing this requirement has become a point of contention. Recently, Microsoft released a new build (number 26220.6772) in the Dev channel of its Windows Insider Preview program. This update specifically targets and removes known methods that users have employed to set up their PCs without a Microsoft account. According to the tech giant, these workarounds could potentially lead to an incomplete setup experience, leaving devices improperly configured. The update eliminates specific commands previously utilized to bypass the account requirement during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE). Notably, it has removed the “OOBE\BYPASSNRO” command, which was highlighted earlier this year, and a newer command, “start ms-cxh:localonly.” Previously, users could activate these commands by launching a command prompt with Shift+F10 during setup, allowing them to circumvent both the Microsoft account and internet connection necessities. Currently, Windows 11 Pro users have an additional method for creating a local account by indicating their intention to join a corporate domain. It remains uncertain if this option has been affected by the new update. While Microsoft refers to certain setup screens as “critical,” many users might not agree with this designation. The additional steps associated with signing in to a Microsoft account often include promotional offers for Microsoft 365 and Xbox Game Pass, as well as opt-ins for features that collect user data. The distinction between what Microsoft considers essential and user priorities continues to highlight a growing disconnect between the company and its user base.
