Microsoft rolls back some of its Copilot AI bloat on Windows

On Friday, Microsoft unveiled a set of strategic updates aimed at refining the user experience of its Windows 11 operating system, prominently featuring a reduction in the prevalence of its AI assistant, Copilot. The tech giant announced plans to scale back Copilot's integration across various applications, beginning with Photos, Widgets, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool. Pavan Davuluri, Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, emphasized a more thoughtful approach to AI integration in a recent blog post. He noted that the company is committed to implementing AI in ways that deliver genuine utility to users. This shift towards a minimalist strategy suggests that Microsoft is responding to a growing consumer demand for more meaningful and less intrusive AI experiences. Recent research from Pew indicates a notable shift in public sentiment towards AI; as of June 2025, 50% of U.S. adults expressed more concern than excitement about artificial intelligence, a rise from 37% in 2021. This trend illustrates the importance of trust and safety in AI applications, prompting Microsoft to reconsider how it deploys these technologies. Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Microsoft had quietly abandoned plans for Copilot-branded AI features across Windows 11, which included potential integrations within the Settings app and File Explorer. Additionally, the launch of the AI-powered memory feature, Windows Recall for Copilot + PCs, faced delays exceeding a year due to privacy issues raised by users. Although the Recall feature was finally introduced last April, ongoing security vulnerabilities continue to emerge. Davuluri highlighted that user feedback has been a significant influence on Microsoft's decisions regarding AI on Windows. He and his team have actively engaged with the community over the past several months to gather insights on desired improvements. The adjustments to Copilot are just one facet of a broader set of changes the company is implementing. Other enhancements include the ability to reposition the taskbar, increased user control over system updates, expedited File Explorer performance, improved Widgets functionality, and updates to the Feedback Hub, along with better navigation for participants in the Windows Insider Program, who provide feedback on future Windows developments.
