In a bold move to reconnect with its gaming community, Microsoft has announced a reduction in subscription prices for its Game Pass services, following a pledge from its new gaming leader to prioritize Xbox fans. The flagship Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which offers access to a vast library of games for both Xbox consoles and PCs, has seen its monthly fee drop from $29.99 to $22.99. Similarly, the more limited PC Game Pass will now cost $13.99, down from its previous price of $16.49. In a strategic shift, upcoming titles from the renowned "Call of Duty" series will no longer be included with the subscriptions upon their release. Instead, gamers will have the option to purchase the new titles individually at a price point of $69.99 or wait until the following holiday season to access older versions. This pricing adjustment comes as Asha Sharma, a former Meta executive, takes the helm as Microsoft's gaming chief, succeeding Phil Spencer in February. Under Sharma's leadership, the company aims to recalibrate its Xbox business strategy. Although gaming accounted for 7% of Microsoft's total revenue in the last quarter, the division experienced a decline of approximately 10% year-over-year. Notably, while other segments such as Azure cloud services and Microsoft 365 saw growth of at least 10%, hardware sales plummeted by 32% following the cancellation of projects like "Everwild" and "Perfect Dark." During a recent conference call, Microsoft's finance chief, Amy Hood, highlighted that revenue from Xbox content and services fell short of expectations, prompting an undisclosed impairment charge in the gaming sector. Despite these challenges, Microsoft reported a subscriber base of 34 million for Game Pass in 2024. In their blog post, the company acknowledged a diverse player demographic, emphasizing that these changes aim to address feedback received from their community. The landscape of gaming continues to evolve, and with these adjustments, Microsoft is taking significant steps to enhance the value and accessibility of its offerings.
