Microsoft ends tradition of naming competitors in regulatory filings

In a surprising move, Microsoft has decided to forgo its long-standing practice of naming its competitors in regulatory filings. The tech giant's latest annual report, released on Wednesday, marks a significant departure from a trend that has persisted for decades. This 101-page document notably lacks any references to major rivals like Apple and IBM, as well as private-sector challengers such as Anthropic and Databricks. Last year, Microsoft identified over 25 companies as its competitors, a tradition that dates back to at least 1994. This shift signifies a break from a common industry norm, as many of its peers—including Apple, Meta, and Nvidia—continue to explicitly name their competitors. However, some companies, like Amazon, Tesla, and Alphabet, have also opted out of naming rivals in their annual reports. Now, Microsoft has adopted a broader approach, stating that it faces competition across various markets, including productivity software, PC operating systems, and cloud infrastructure. This change in disclosure format reflects the dynamic nature of the industries in which Microsoft operates. Notably, in 2024, the company began recognizing OpenAI as a competitor, following the AI startup's introduction of a web search feature. A Microsoft spokesperson clarified that the updated competition section aims to encompass larger categories, aligning with the fast-paced market landscape. Despite this new reporting style, Microsoft executives remain vigilant about developments within the tech sector. CEO Satya Nadella made references to Amazon in the company’s earnings call, while Scott Guthrie, EVP of Microsoft's cloud and AI division, commented on AWS's offerings at a recent conference. The news comes on the heels of a positive earnings report, which led to a rise in Microsoft’s stock price and pushed its market capitalization beyond the $4 trillion threshold. Investors reacted favorably to the company's quarterly results and optimistic guidance, highlighting Microsoft's influential position in the technology landscape.
