Internal Microsoft memo lays out its new strategy for selling AI as the company cuts salespeople

In a bid to enhance its focus on artificial intelligence, Microsoft is undergoing a significant transformation within its sales division, led by Judson Althoff, the company's chief commercial officer. An internal memo from Althoff, which has been acquired by Business Insider, outlines a new strategy aimed at positioning Microsoft as a leader in AI solutions. The memo was circulated just before a major layoff announcement that impacted several sales personnel in Althoff's team, known as Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions (MCAPS). Although the memo did not address the layoffs directly, it emphasized the need for agility and innovation within the organization. Althoff's vision includes a redefined structure for the sales team, which will see the number of solution areas reduced from six to three: AI Business Solutions, Cloud & AI Platforms, and Security. This restructuring aims to streamline operations and enhance the company's offerings in the competitive AI landscape. The AI Business Solutions area is set to prioritize the integration of AI 'Copilots' across various devices and roles, promoting Microsoft's suite of applications, including Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365. Meanwhile, the Cloud & AI Platforms group will focus on bolstering the Azure cloud services and developing advanced AI solutions. In light of increasing competition from AI players like OpenAI and Google, Althoff emphasized the necessity for Microsoft to adopt a more aggressive stance in the market, particularly concerning its security products. As businesses demand innovative AI tools, Microsoft is leveraging its established presence to meet these needs, even as employees express a preference for widely recognized platforms like ChatGPT.
