Microsoft plans to ship prototype of next Xbox console to developers in 2027

In a bold step towards enhancing its gaming portfolio, Microsoft has announced plans to distribute prototypes of its upcoming Xbox console to developers in 2027. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to compete more effectively with industry giants Nintendo and Sony. Jason Ronald, a vice president in Microsoft's Xbox division, detailed the console's impressive specifications in a recent blog post. He highlighted that the device will feature a custom chip designed by Advanced Micro Devices, promising a significant increase in ray tracing performance. The new technology aims to integrate intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline, ultimately delivering more efficient and visually ambitious gaming experiences. This announcement follows recent changes within Microsoft's gaming leadership, including the retirement of Phil Spencer, the long-time head of gaming. He will be succeeded by Asha Sharma, an executive with a background in artificial intelligence. In her communication to employees, Sharma emphasized a renewed focus on Xbox, beginning with a strong commitment to console gaming. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the new console, Microsoft's gaming division has faced challenges, with gaming accounting for just over 7% of the company's revenue in the last quarter. Reports indicate a 32% decline in Xbox hardware sales, prompting the company to record an impairment charge in its gaming sector. Since the launch of the Xbox Series X and Series S in 2020, Microsoft has struggled to keep pace with competitors, according to estimates from VGChartz. In the meantime, Asus has introduced handheld Xbox-branded devices, while the existing Xbox Series S and X models also utilize AMD processors. Ronald expressed his excitement about the upcoming hardware, stating, "We plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027." Microsoft is reportedly aiming for its gaming division to achieve a 30% profit margin, amid recent layoffs and the cancellation of several development projects. Last week, Sharma provided a glimpse into the next-generation console, referred to internally as Project Helix, promising enhanced performance for Xbox and PC games.
