Microsoft’s vision for AI PCs looks a lot like another crack at Cortana

In the latest update from Microsoft, the company is once again placing a strong emphasis on generative AI technologies within its operating system. This recent announcement showcases Microsoft's renewed focus on what they describe as 'agentic' AI, a concept that allows AI-powered applications to execute tasks autonomously while users continue with their other activities. During a recent press briefing, Microsoft's Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, Yusuf Mehdi, shared insights on the capabilities of the upcoming 'AI PCs'. These systems are designed to understand user input—whether through text or voice—enabling them to assist users based on the context of their current screen. Mehdi emphasized that these AI assistants would perform actions on behalf of users, enhancing the overall experience. A standout feature revealed is the new voice activation phrase, 'Hey, Copilot', for Windows 11. This innovation allows users to summon the AI chatbot using just their voice, making it easier to interact without relying on a mouse or keyboard. Users can also opt to use a keyboard shortcut, similar to the previous Cortana function, to access Copilot. Once users are finished, they can simply say 'goodbye' to dismiss the assistant. While similar voice-activated functionalities have been available on Macs and smartphones for some time, Microsoft is banking on the success of Copilot to differentiate itself from its earlier attempts with the now-discontinued Cortana. The company aims to provide a more effective AI assistant that meets the needs of modern users, hoping that this renewed approach will resonate better than past efforts.
