Microsoft gained $7.6B from OpenAI last quarter

In an intriguing twist to their complex partnership, Microsoft has reported a staggering $7.6 billion boost to its net income from its investment in OpenAI, a company that is witnessing unprecedented revenue growth. This revelation came during Microsoft's latest quarterly earnings announcement, highlighting the substantial impact of its financial backing of the AI powerhouse. Although details of their financial arrangement remain somewhat ambiguous, it is believed that Microsoft holds a 20% revenue share agreement with OpenAI. The tech giant has committed over $13 billion to the AI lab, which is reportedly seeking additional funding at an eye-popping valuation ranging between $750 billion and $830 billion, according to Bloomberg. In September, the two companies revisited the terms of their agreement as OpenAI transitioned into a public benefit corporation. This restructuring led to OpenAI's commitment to purchase an additional $250 billion in Azure services, which has been categorized on Microsoft's financials as “commercial remaining performance obligations.” This category saw a significant increase, climbing to $625 billion from $392 billion in the previous quarter, with 45% attributed to OpenAI. Additionally, Microsoft’s quarterly earnings also spotlighted Anthropic, which is expected to enhance Microsoft’s future revenue through commercial bookings that surged by an impressive 230%. Last November, Microsoft announced a $5 billion investment in Anthropic, which subsequently secured $30 billion in Azure compute capacity, with plans for further purchases. To support its AI initiatives, Microsoft has been making substantial capital investments, spending $37.5 billion this quarter. Notably, two-thirds of this expenditure was dedicated to “short-lived” assets, primarily GPUs and CPUs essential for its Azure cloud services tailored for AI applications. The company reported a remarkable $81.3 billion in revenue, surpassing Wall Street expectations of $80.27 billion, marking a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. For the first time, Microsoft's Cloud revenue reached $50 billion this quarter, and while most business units reported double-digit growth year-over-year, Windows devices and Xbox content saw minimal gains or declines.
