Microsoft earnings: Cloud growth and capex numbers in focus for Q2

Microsoft is gearing up to reveal its fiscal second-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday. Analysts from LSEG predict an impressive 15% increase in year-over-year revenue for the quarter ending December 31. Investors are particularly focused on the growth trajectory of Microsoft's Azure cloud services, with expectations of significant expansion. Experts surveyed by StreetAccount and CNBC anticipate growth rates of 39.4% and 38.9% in Azure, respectively. This follows a remarkable 40% revenue increase in the first fiscal quarter, marking a potential slowdown after three consecutive quarters of growth acceleration. In the fiercely competitive cloud market, Microsoft, like its peers including Amazon, continues to invest heavily in data centers equipped with specialized chips designed for generative artificial intelligence applications. Furthermore, Microsoft engages in leasing arrangements with providers like CoreWeave and Nebius to enhance its cloud capabilities. Analysts from Visible Alpha forecast that Microsoft will report approximately $34.31 billion in capital expenditures and finance leases for the quarter, reflecting a 52% increase. During this period, the company also announced plans to raise prices on its commercial Office productivity software subscriptions. In a notable development, OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has committed to an additional $250 billion investment in Azure services, while Anthropic has revealed plans to purchase $30 billion worth of cloud services and secure up to a gigawatt of additional computing capacity. Despite these positive projections, Microsoft shares have seen a decline of about 10% over the past three months, contrasting with a 1% gain in the S&P 500 index. Microsoft executives will discuss the financial results and offer future guidance during a conference call with analysts, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
