Microsoft is gearing up to announce its fiscal third-quarter earnings following a tumultuous quarter for its stock, which has seen its worst performance since 2008. Concerns surrounding the impact of artificial intelligence on software, coupled with worries about the effectiveness of Microsoft's significant AI investments, have contributed to this decline. Despite these challenges, the tech giant is still expected to demonstrate solid growth. Analysts predict a 16% increase in revenue for the quarter ending March 31, projecting figures to reach $70.1 billion, compared to the same period last year. Microsoft has been actively integrating its Copilot technology across its productivity applications and offering access to major AI models through its Azure cloud services. The company aims to entice businesses to pay more for AI-enhanced services in a competitive landscape dominated by players like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Recently, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted a significant milestone, announcing the largest deployment of the 365 Copilot commercial AI add-on, following Accenture's decision to purchase licenses for 740,000 employees. Piper Sandler analysts, who advocate for buying Microsoft stock, noted that any additional insights on the adoption and monetization of M365 Copilot would likely be welcomed by investors. Attention will also be directed towards discussions surrounding data center expenditure, as Microsoft continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure to meet rising demands for computational resources. Analysts anticipate capital expenditures to reach $34.9 billion, marking a substantial 63% increase from the previous year. On the same day, Google's parent company Alphabet, along with Amazon and Meta, will also share their financial results, with all four tech leaders expected to collectively invest over $600 billion in capital expenditures this year. This earnings season marks their first communication since the onset of the U.S.-Iran conflict, which has caused fluctuations in oil prices and disrupted global supply chains. Moreover, Microsoft has faced notable executive transitions, including the retirements of key figures such as Rajesh Jha, the leader of Office software, and gaming chief Phil Spencer. Following the earnings report, Microsoft executives will engage with analysts and provide guidance during a conference call scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET.
