Internal Microsoft memo details plans for major update to its flagship coding service, as AI-powered rivals gain ground

In a strategic move to bolster its flagship software development tool, Microsoft is preparing a substantial upgrade to Visual Studio, as revealed in an internal memo. This development comes amid increasing competition from AI-driven coding solutions that have gained traction in the market. The tech giant's free, open-source code editor, VS Code, has been leveraged by competitors like Amazon and Windsurf to create alternative developer tools. In contrast, Visual Studio is a premium Integrated Development Environment (IDE) designed to provide a comprehensive suite of features for developers, enabling them to write, debug, edit, and deploy code while managing entire projects effectively. Jay Parikh, who recently took the helm of Microsoft's Core AI organization overseeing developer tools including Visual Studio, communicated plans for the upcoming major release, referred to as "Visual Studio 18." This information was shared in an email to his team in April, which was subsequently reviewed by Business Insider. The last significant upgrade occurred in 2021, and Microsoft has been diligently working on the new version for some time. The company has initiated "early dogfooding," allowing its tech employees to test the new features ahead of a broader release. Although Parikh did not provide a specific timeline, a Microsoft blog hinted at upcoming announcements, suggesting that more details about Visual Studio's future would be shared later this summer. The new iteration of Visual Studio is expected to incorporate a range of AI functionalities, aimed at countering the advances made by competing services. According to recent data, Microsoft's AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot, has seen a decline in market share against rivals like Cursor. Meanwhile, Amazon has introduced its own IDE named Kiro, which utilizes AI agents to interpret user prompts and existing data, producing code in near real-time. Microsoft has consistently updated the current version of Visual Studio, known as version 17, with the latest rollout in July introducing enhancements such as support for Anthropic's latest models and improvements to the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an industry standard facilitating connections between models and external data sources.
