Microsoft turns to Amazon for help with GitHub's AI-driven capacity issues

In a surprising move, Microsoft is collaborating with its cloud competitor, Amazon, to resolve capacity issues plaguing its GitHub platform. This partnership comes in response to a surge in demand for AI tools, which has led to a series of outages on the popular coding site. Acquired by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub serves as a crucial hub for developers, allowing them to store, manage, and collaborate on code. Historically, GitHub operated its own data centers, but Microsoft had intended to transition the platform entirely to its Azure cloud service by 2027. However, the burgeoning demand for AI has compelled Microsoft to seek assistance from Amazon Web Services (AWS). AI-powered coding tools have dramatically increased the volume of software being developed, resulting in an overwhelming influx of code submissions to GitHub. According to Chief Operating Officer Kyle Daigle, GitHub is projected to see commits soar to 14 billion by 2026, a significant rise from 1 billion in 2025. To accommodate this rapid growth, Microsoft is leveraging AWS to bolster GitHub’s computing capacity. This decision is particularly noteworthy, given Microsoft and Amazon's competitive relationship in the cloud services market. By turning to AWS for support, Microsoft is prioritizing the immediate needs of GitHub over its strategic goals with Azure. Such arrangements are becoming increasingly common among tech giants facing similar pressures; for instance, Google recently struck a deal with SpaceX to secure AI computing power for nearly $920 million per month from late 2026 to mid-2029. A Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged that GitHub is utilizing multiple cloud providers but did not confirm specific details regarding their partnership with Amazon. "The unprecedented increase in development activity has tested our infrastructure's limits," they stated. To address this demand, Microsoft is expediting its transition to Azure while also exploring a multi-cloud approach to ensure future scalability. An Amazon spokesperson refrained from commenting on individual clients but highlighted that customers choose AWS for its reliable and efficient global infrastructure. Despite the unusual nature of such collaborations, the ultimate goal remains clear: to keep essential services operational for users. GitHub has recently experienced numerous outages, leading some industry voices, like HashiCorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto, to criticize the platform as unreliable for serious work. As Microsoft aims to enhance GitHub's competitiveness against emerging AI tools, it has projected a staggering $190 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, mainly for expanding data center capabilities. However, delays in various data center projects and the need to support other AI initiatives complicate their efforts. An internal Microsoft meeting revealed a consensus on the urgent need to revamp GitHub to remain competitive in an evolving technological landscape.
