Microsoft forms superintelligence team to rival Meta's, stresses 'humanist' focus

In a significant move to bolster its AI capabilities, Microsoft has unveiled its MAI Superintelligence Team, aiming to rival Meta's recent initiative. This new team, which will be led by Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, was announced on Thursday and is designed to establish the company as a leader in the field of AI development. Suleyman emphasized the team's mission to create the "world's best place to research and build AI, bar none." In a blog post, he articulated a vision for what he calls "humanist superintelligence," clarifying that the goal is not merely technological advancement but rather addressing tangible issues in a controlled and responsible manner. "We are not building an ill-defined and ethereal superintelligence; we are building a practical technology explicitly designed only to serve humanity," he insisted. This initiative follows closely on the heels of Meta's Superintelligence Lab, which was launched four months earlier under the direction of Alexandr Wang. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed a similar ambition, suggesting that the development of superintelligence represents the dawn of a transformative era for society. However, Meta's journey has not been without challenges, as the company recently laid off 600 employees from its superintelligence division. Microsoft appears to be taking a distinct approach by rejecting the notion of a competitive race towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Suleyman remarked, "In doing this, we reject narratives about a race to AGI, and instead see it as part of a wider and deeply human endeavor to improve our lives and future prospects." This sentiment aligns with the philosophy of Anthropic, another AI firm that shares a commitment to ensuring that advanced AI systems remain beneficial to humanity. Additionally, the landscape of superintelligence research is rapidly evolving, with notable figures such as Ilya Sutskever, cofounder of OpenAI, also entering the fray. In 2024, he established his own research entity, Safe Superintelligence Inc., after departing from OpenAI. Amidst this competitive environment, Microsoft has reinforced its partnership with OpenAI, having recently signed a new agreement that solidifies its financial stake in the organization. As these tech giants pursue their visions for superintelligence, Suleyman likened the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI to that of "siblings" who maintain a cooperative yet occasionally contentious rapport.
