In a significant move, Microsoft announced that prices for Xbox game consoles will be increasing globally, just hours after Apple revealed similar hikes for its hardware. Effective August 1, the cost of the 512GB Xbox models will increase by $100, while the 1TB versions will rise by $150. Notably, Microsoft is also discontinuing its 2TB model as part of this change. The company attributed these price adjustments to skyrocketing costs of memory and console storage, which have surged to more than 2.5 times previous levels. Microsoft has cautioned that these costs could potentially double by fall 2027. This announcement comes on the heels of a price increase for Xbox consoles in the U.S. just last October. Both announcements reflect the broader industry challenges influenced by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Apple cited similar pressures, pointing to the soaring demand for memory and storage chips as a driving factor behind its price increases. The simultaneous hikes from major tech companies highlight the financial strain on consumers as the AI boom continues to reshape the electronics market. In an effort to alleviate the impact of these price increases, Microsoft is promoting financing options and plans to enhance access to more affordable hardware. The company indicated that it is developing new programs to offer previously owned consoles at lower prices. Additionally, customers purchasing eligible Xbox products through Microsoft Stores will have better access to Buy Now, Pay Later options, while those shopping on Amazon can qualify for up to 12 months of 0% APR financing. This price hike aligns Microsoft with other gaming giants, as Sony has also increased the cost of its PS5 digital editions from its initial launch price of $499 to $599. Meanwhile, Nintendo has managed a more modest increase for its upcoming Switch 2 but may face similar pressures to adjust its pricing in the future.
