Microsoft has unveiled a new version of its operating system, Windows 11 26H1, aimed exclusively at new devices powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 Elite chips. This release marks a significant departure from the usual update cadence that the company has adhered to since the launch of Windows 11 in late 2021. Traditionally, Microsoft rolls out annual feature updates in the latter half of each year, which are essential for users to maintain security and access new features. Unlike previous iterations, Windows 11 26H1 is not merely an update but represents a distinct version of the operating system. It is important to note that this version will not be available to existing Windows 11 PCs, which will continue to operate on the currently supported versions 24H2 and 25H2, released in the fall of 2024 and 2025, respectively. Users of these older versions will not receive an upgrade path to 26H1. Additionally, PCs that come pre-installed with Windows 11 26H1 will not have the option to upgrade to what is anticipated to be the next major release, Windows 11 26H2, expected later this year. Microsoft has indicated that while a future update will align the version numbers across the Windows ecosystem, details on its timing remain unclear, although it is expected before March 2028, the deadline for security updates for Windows 11 26H1. For most users, the differences between these versions may go unnoticed in day-to-day use. Microsoft assures that 26H1 will continue to receive monthly updates for security, quality, and new features, similar to its predecessors. The company has also shifted many functionalities to be delivered through the Microsoft Store and regular monthly updates, making the specific version of Windows less critical than it once was.
