Why Microsoft is adding Anthropic models into Office 365 Copilot despite OpenAI partnership

In a strategic move to broaden its AI capabilities, Microsoft is set to incorporate Anthropic’s Claude models into its Office 365 suite. This decision marks a significant departure from the company's previous reliance on OpenAI’s technology for the Copilot features across applications like Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Reports indicate that the announcement could arrive within weeks, highlighting Microsoft’s shift towards diversifying its AI partnerships. The tech giant plans to collaborate with Amazon to access Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model via AWS, contrasting with its existing arrangement with OpenAI, which allows the use of models without extra costs due to a substantial investment. Despite speculation regarding potential friction with OpenAI, particularly concerning the latter's transition into a public benefit corporation, Microsoft asserts that their partnership remains strong. A spokesperson emphasized, “OpenAI will continue to be our partner on frontier models, and we remain committed to our long-term partnership.” Microsoft executives reportedly believe that Claude Sonnet 4 outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-5 in specific tasks, particularly in creating visually appealing presentations in PowerPoint. Interestingly, Claude Sonnet 4 is not even Anthropic’s premier model, indicating that Microsoft perceives considerable advantages in its overall performance. This integration aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy aimed at enhancing AI diversity and self-sufficiency. The company already utilizes various models, including xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude, through GitHub Copilot, and is in the process of developing its own models like MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview. Meanwhile, OpenAI is embarking on initiatives to reduce its dependency on Microsoft, including the launch of a jobs platform aimed at competing with LinkedIn and plans to manufacture custom AI chips with Broadcom by 2026. Despite these developments, Microsoft has made it clear that the pricing for Copilot will remain steady at $30 per user per month, even with the upcoming integration of Anthropic’s technology.
