Xbox price shock: Microsoft hikes consoles by up to $150 globally

Microsoft has announced an increase in the prices of its Xbox gaming consoles by as much as $150 globally, effective August 1. The decision has been attributed to a surge in demand for memory chips driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, which are impacting costs across the consumer electronics sector. For instance, the cost of Xbox consoles featuring 512 GB of storage will rise by $100, while those equipped with 1 TB will see a hike of $150. Notably, Microsoft will no longer offer the 2 TB version of the console. This price adjustment follows previous increases last year, which were influenced by tariffs, sluggish consumer spending, and fierce competition within the gaming industry. The company highlighted that the rising prices of console storage and memory have increased by over 2.5 times, with projections indicating they may double again by fall 2027. The gaming sector has been particularly affected by the ongoing hardware supply chain crisis, as the growth of AI infrastructure has prompted tech companies to funnel investments into data centers filled with high-performance processors and memory components. As a result, chip manufacturers have prioritized AI-related products, causing a tighter supply of essential components for consumer electronics, including gaming consoles, laptops, and tablets. Microsoft's price hike is part of a broader trend, as Sony similarly raised the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles earlier this year.
