Microsoft: Anthropic Claude remains available to customers except the Defense Department

Microsoft has reaffirmed that customers, including enterprises and startups utilizing Anthropic Claude through its platforms, will continue to have access to the AI model. This reassurance comes despite rising tensions between the Pentagon and Anthropic, a notable AI startup. The U.S. Department of Defense has labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company declined to grant unrestricted access to its technology for uses it deemed unsafe, such as mass surveillance and fully autonomous weaponry. This designation, typically applied to foreign adversaries, prohibits the Pentagon from employing Anthropic’s products and mandates that any partners working with the Defense Department must certify they do not use Anthropic models. In response, Anthropic has announced plans to contest this designation in court. Despite this setback, Microsoft, which offers a wide range of services including Office and cloud solutions to various federal agencies, confirmed it would continue to provide Anthropic’s models to its customers, excluding the Defense Department. A spokesperson from Microsoft stated, "Our legal team has reviewed the situation and determined that Anthropic products, including Claude, will remain accessible to our customers – aside from the Department of Defense – through platforms like M365, GitHub, and Microsoft’s AI Foundry. We will also keep collaborating with Anthropic on projects unrelated to defense." This commitment aligns with comments made by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who emphasized that the supply-chain risk designation specifically affects the use of Claude by customers under Defense Department contracts, but does not restrict other applications of Claude for those customers. As the situation unfolds, Claude's popularity among consumers continues to rise, showcasing Anthropic's resilience in the face of the Pentagon's demands.
