Microsoft launches new Azure Local capabilities to run AI without cloud connectivity

Microsoft has unveiled significant enhancements to its Sovereign Cloud platform, tailored specifically for use in environments lacking internet connectivity. These upgrades aim to establish a robust infrastructure capable of supporting large AI models, essential office applications, and cloud systems without reliance on the internet. This initiative is particularly beneficial for government entities, defense organizations, and industries subject to strict security regulations, where operational integrity in secure settings is paramount. The company emphasized its commitment to offering a comprehensive "full stack" experience that includes both fundamental governance and sophisticated AI inferencing capabilities. In a recent press statement, Microsoft noted, "Customers can now ensure uninterrupted operations, safeguard mission-critical workloads, and implement consistent governance and policy enforcement, all while maintaining data, identities, and operations within their sovereign limits." The latest updates to Microsoft’s Azure Local platform include three key enhancements for disconnected operations. First, organizations can now manage crucial infrastructure by utilizing Azure’s standard governance and policy controls without cloud connectivity. Microsoft has optimized this solution for sovereign, classified, or isolated environments. Secondly, Microsoft 365 Local capabilities allow organizations to utilize core productivity services such as Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and Skype for Business Server securely within their sovereign boundaries on Azure Local infrastructure. This ensures that teams can continue to operate effectively, even in the absence of cloud access. Lastly, the introduction of Foundry Local will enable organizations to run extensive multimodal AI models locally, using partner hardware, including options from NVIDIA. This advancement marks a significant step in facilitating advanced AI operations in disconnected settings.
