Recent internal surveys at Microsoft reveal a shift in employee sentiment, highlighting a growing sense of empowerment but also concerns regarding managerial support. In a memo shared by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, the findings from the company's latest employee surveys were discussed, showcasing both strengths and areas for improvement. According to the memo, employees reported feeling more "energized" and "empowered" to engage in meaningful work. However, there was a noticeable decline in satisfaction with coaching, feedback, and motivation provided by managers. This reflects the increasing performance pressure that staff have faced in recent quarters, alongside significant changes to the HR organization responsible for pay and promotion processes. Additionally, Microsoft has offered buyouts to employees considering retirement. "While much of this feedback is encouraging, I also acknowledge the intense changes we are navigating. Many employees have expressed feelings of uncertainty and pressure as the work landscape evolves," Coleman stated. She emphasized the leadership's commitment to enhancing transparency, improving communication frequency, and providing contextual updates. The company’s biannual "Employee Signals" survey indicated that 79% of employees reported feeling energized and empowered, with an overall increase of three points from previous results. In contrast, responses regarding confidence in managerial effectiveness remained steady, with 85% of employees expressing trust in their managers. Coleman thanked the 71% of employees who participated in the survey, providing nearly 265,000 comments that contribute to the company’s understanding of its current state. She reiterated the importance of open dialogue about the work experience at Microsoft, noting that employees' day-to-day experiences are significantly influenced by their managers and leaders. As Microsoft continues to adapt and transform, the leadership team recognizes the need for ongoing conversations about what employees value most in their work environment, while also acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.
