Microsoft layoffs hit 830 workers in home state of Washington

This week, Microsoft revealed significant job reductions, resulting in the loss of 830 positions within its home state of Washington. Among those affected were nearly a dozen game design professionals, along with several engineers and designers. A document submitted to Washington employment officials detailed the layoffs, which included three audio designers, two mechanical engineers, one optical engineer, and a lab technician. Additionally, the cuts encompassed roles in the Microsoft Research division, affecting five individual contributors and one manager, as well as ten lawyers and six hardware engineers. The company disclosed plans to eliminate a total of 9,000 jobs, aiming to streamline operations and motivate staff to engage in more impactful work through the adoption of new technologies, as reported by a source familiar with the situation. In the wake of the announcement, numerous Microsoft sales representatives and game developers took to social media to share their experiences and announce their job losses. Earlier this year, Microsoft indicated that its revenue from Xbox content and services had risen by 8%, although this growth lagged behind the overall company growth of 13%. The layoffs also affected various sales roles, with 16 customer success account management staff members, 28 in sales strategy enablement, and five in sales compensation losing their jobs. A government affairs worker based in Washington was also impacted, alongside 17 positions in cloud solution architecture. Microsoft’s rapid revenue growth is primarily driven by Azure and other cloud services, which are billed based on customer usage. While CEO Satya Nadella has not commented publicly on the layoffs, CFO Amy Hood had previously highlighted the company's commitment to "cost efficiencies" during a conference call with analysts in April.
