In a recent episode of Mayim Bialik's podcast "Breakdown," Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, shared his insights on the growing role of AI chatbots in helping individuals manage their emotions and achieve a sense of clarity. He emphasized that these digital companions have become increasingly popular for offering support in various personal situations, such as navigating breakups or resolving family disputes. Suleyman clarified that while AI chatbots are not a substitute for professional therapy, their design promotes nonjudgmental and empathetic interactions. He believes that this unique approach allows users to express themselves freely, stating, "These models were designed to be nonjudgmental, nondirectional, and with nonviolent communication as their primary method. This turned out to be something that the world needs." He noted that utilizing chatbots can facilitate a healthier emotional environment, allowing individuals to "detoxify ourselves" and engage more positively with others in their lives. Suleyman, a cofounder of DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014, pointed out the importance of having a safe space where people can ask questions without fear of judgment. However, not everyone in the tech industry shares his enthusiasm. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has raised concerns about the implications of relying on chatbots for significant life decisions. In a post on X in August 2025, he expressed unease about the potential for users to trust AI advice on critical matters. He warned of possible legal ramifications, including the obligation to disclose therapy-like conversations in lawsuits. Mental health professionals have voiced their apprehensions as well, suggesting that depending on AI for emotional support might lead to increased feelings of loneliness and dependency. During the podcast, Suleyman acknowledged these concerns, admitting that there is a "definitely a dependency risk" associated with chatbots and their interactions. Despite the mixed opinions, Suleyman is not alone in recognizing the potential benefits of AI in therapeutic settings. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also advocated for the notion that everyone could benefit from having a therapist, suggesting that AI could serve as a valuable resource for those lacking access to human therapists.
