Microsoft slashes AI sales growth targets as customers resist unproven agents

In a significant shift, Microsoft has revised its sales growth expectations for AI agent products following disappointing performance from its sales team in the fiscal year ending in June. This adjustment, reported by The Information, marks an unusual move for the tech giant, which has struggled to meet its ambitious sales targets for AI technologies. AI agents are sophisticated applications of AI language models, designed to carry out complex, multistep tasks autonomously instead of merely responding to straightforward prompts. These 'agentic' features have been a cornerstone of Microsoft’s sales strategy, particularly highlighted during its Build conference in May, where the company proclaimed the onset of 'the era of AI agents.' Microsoft has pitched these agents as tools capable of automating intricate tasks, such as creating dashboards from sales data or drafting customer reports. However, as the fiscal year progresses, the reality of delivering on these promises has proven more challenging than anticipated. The Information revealed that one U.S. Azure sales team aimed to boost customer spending on a product called Foundry—designed to assist clients in developing AI applications—by 50 percent. Alarmingly, fewer than 20% of the sales team achieved their targets. In response, Microsoft has reduced these expectations to a more modest growth goal of approximately 25% for the current fiscal year. Additionally, in another U.S. Azure division, many sales representatives were unable to meet an earlier goal to double Foundry sales. Consequently, Microsoft has lowered their quotas to a 50% increase for the same period. This trend reflects broader challenges that the company faces in convincing customers to invest in unproven AI technologies.
