Microsoft shares major update on AI skilling initiative ahead of Satya Nadella's

As Microsoft prepares for CEO Satya Nadella's upcoming visit to India, the company has unveiled significant advancements in its AI skilling initiative. This program seeks to equip 10 million Indians with AI skills by 2030, a commitment Nadella made during his previous trip in January. Remarkably, just ten months into the initiative, Microsoft reports that it has successfully trained 5.6 million individuals, surpassing the halfway point. Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, emphasized the pivotal role of skilling in India's AI evolution. He stated, "India is at a crucial juncture in its AI journey, characterized by a commitment to inclusivity in AI opportunities. At Microsoft, we regard skilling as fundamental to this transformation." He further explained that by leveraging India's vast talent pool and robust digital infrastructure, alongside partnerships with the Government of India, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and the Directorate General of Training (DGT), they aim to integrate AI education into vocational institutions across the nation. Highlighting their collaboration with the DGT, Microsoft is offering a one-year micro-degree program titled "AI Programming Assistant" at 33 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) throughout India. Notably, the initiative mandates that at least half of the participants in the program be women. An example of this effort is the NSTI Bengaluru model, which consists of 1,600 hours of comprehensive training covering essential topics such as Python, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and foundational principles of Generative AI. Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, remarked on the necessity for skilling strategies to adapt in response to the rapid changes brought by AI. He noted, "As AI transforms the workplace, our approach to skilling must evolve to keep pace with the innovation and opportunities it presents." Microsoft asserts that this partnership is crucial in nurturing a talent pipeline for various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, IT services, and healthcare.
