Micron rides memory price spike into earnings with stock up 62%, drubbing its tech peers

Micron Technology has seen its stock price skyrocket nearly 62% in 2026, following a dramatic rise in demand for memory chips, particularly those used in Nvidia's artificial intelligence processors. This surge in demand has led to a critical memory shortage affecting many technology companies that are now grappling with increased costs to secure essential components. As the only major U.S. tech firm to experience growth this year, Micron's market capitalization has soared to approximately $520 billion, overtaking Oracle, which stands at $445 billion. Analysts are eagerly awaiting Micron's fiscal second-quarter results, expected to be released on Wednesday, with forecasts predicting a remarkable 148% year-over-year revenue increase. The ongoing memory chip shortage shows no signs of abating, as major tech players are investing heavily to remain competitive in the AI sector. Micron's CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, emphasized the importance of memory in AI systems, likening it to the brain's need for increased memory capacity. Companies like Amazon and Google are ramping up their capital expenditure forecasts as they purchase substantial amounts of Nvidia chips for their cloud services. The demand for Nvidia's Vera Rubin graphics processing units is particularly high, with data centers requiring extensive memory to support these systems. According to RBC analysts, an Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 system requires significantly more dynamic random access memory compared to previous models. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, recently projected a staggering $1 trillion in orders for Blackwell and Vera Rubin GPUs through 2027, further elevating Micron's position in the market. Micron reported being sold out of high-bandwidth memory for 2026, highlighting the supply constraints impacting the industry. The memory shortage is expected to persist, with industry experts forecasting that average DRAM prices will rise by nearly 32% in the upcoming fiscal second quarter. Additionally, Micron is projected to achieve a gross margin exceeding 71% along with a significant revenue increase. However, the surge in memory costs is affecting the broader tech landscape. Analysts from TrendForce noted a substantial increase in PC DRAM contract prices, while IDC recently downgraded its PC sales forecast, predicting an 11.3% decline this year. In response to the soaring memory prices, Dell has warned investors about the escalating costs of DRAM and NAND flash memory. The company's operating chief, Jeff Clarke, indicated that prices for DRAM have risen five and a half times in just six months. Micron is actively working to boost supply, having announced plans for new fabrication plants in New York and an assembly facility in India to enhance production capabilities.
