Micron Technology experienced a remarkable rise in its stock price during premarket trading on Thursday, following the company’s impressive third-quarter earnings, which were bolstered by the ongoing AI boom. The memory chip manufacturer reported a staggering revenue increase, soaring from $9.3 billion the previous year to $41.46 billion for its fiscal third quarter, significantly surpassing analyst predictions of approximately $36 billion, as per LSEG consensus estimates. Looking ahead, Micron is forecasting revenue of around $50 billion for the upcoming quarter, a substantial leap from the $11.3 billion reported in the same period last year. Following these announcements, the company’s stock surged by 16.4% in premarket trading and has appreciated an astonishing 723% over the past year, elevating its market capitalization to $1.2 trillion. This growth can be attributed in part to the increasing demand for memory chips driven by the expansion of AI infrastructure among major hyperscalers. The surge in demand has created a shortage of memory available for consumer devices, such as smartphones and PCs, thereby driving up memory prices and enhancing Micron's financial performance. Additionally, Micron revealed that it has secured 16 long-term agreements with various clients, including data centers and automotive manufacturers, ensuring sales commitments over a three to five-year span. The company anticipates these agreements will yield financial commitments totaling $22 billion. RBC Capital Markets analysts noted that about 40% of Micron's revenue is expected to be derived from these long-term contracts, which include minimum pricing guarantees. This strategy is designed to mitigate margin risks, even if demand fluctuates during the contract duration, typically set at five years. Analysts expressed optimism, suggesting that the current market upcycle could persist until 2027, further solidified by the company’s strategic agreements. They have revised their estimates and price targets, reaffirming a positive outlook for Micron.
