Micron revenue almost triples, tops estimates as demand for memory soars

Micron Technology has reported an astonishing increase in revenue, nearly tripling in the latest quarter and surpassing analysts' expectations. The company's impressive performance is largely attributed to the surging demand for Nvidia graphics processing units, which are essential for running advanced generative artificial intelligence models. Each new generation of Nvidia chips is equipped with increased memory, leading to a supply crunch that Micron and its competitors, Samsung and SK Hynix, are striving to address. In the fiscal second quarter, Micron's revenue rose to $8.05 billion, a significant jump from the same period last year. Looking ahead, Micron projects revenues of approximately $33.5 billion for the current period, a staggering increase from $9.3 billion a year ago, indicating a growth rate of over 200%. The company has also estimated adjusted earnings per share to be around $19.15, far exceeding the LSEG consensus of $12.05 in adjusted earnings per share and $24.3 billion in revenue. Net income saw a remarkable rise as well, climbing to $13.8 billion, or $12.07 per share, compared to just $1.58 billion or $1.41 per share in the same quarter last year. It is important to note that the adjusted earnings exclude factors such as stock-based compensation and losses from debt prepayments. Executives from Micron are set to discuss these results with analysts during a conference call scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. This news highlights the rapidly evolving landscape of the memory market driven by the increasing reliance on AI technologies.
