Why Wall Street thinks US memory maker Micron is the next Nvidia

Micron Technology, the Idaho-based manufacturer of memory chips, has garnered significant attention on Wall Street, sparking comparisons to industry behemoths like Nvidia. The future of this admiration hinges on the duration of the AI-driven demand surge for memory chips, which has tightened supply in the market. Micron asserts that it has fortified its long-term strategy to navigate any potential downturns in demand or excess supply. Recently, Micron's market valuation briefly eclipsed that of major players such as Meta and Tesla, illustrating the fervor surrounding its stock. By the close of trading on Friday, Micron's market capitalization stood at approximately $1.27 trillion, while Meta and Tesla were valued at $1.39 trillion and $1.42 trillion, respectively. This remarkable ascent has seen Micron’s stock soar over 236% in just one month, culminating in a closing price of $1,132 per share. This is a striking turnaround for a company that, until mid-2025, had languished below the $100 mark for several years. The surge in Micron's stock can be attributed to the booming demand for memory chips driven by the expansion of AI data centers. This explosion in AI technology has resulted in a significant shortage of memory products, particularly High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is essential for AI servers that require far more memory than standard consumer devices. Major tech giants such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon AWS, Google, Meta, and Oracle are among the companies rapidly acquiring large quantities of Micron’s products, leading to a situation dubbed "RAMageddon." This shortage is expected to persist until 2027, causing prices of consumer electronics, including Apple devices and Xbox consoles, to rise. Last week, Micron reported impressive third-quarter earnings, revealing a fourfold increase in revenue year-over-year, totaling $41.45 billion. Profits surged from $1.88 billion to $28.2 billion during the same period, and the company has forecasted fourth-quarter revenue to fall between $49 billion and $51 billion. This financial success has only intensified Wall Street's interest, as investors look for more AI-related companies that could replicate Nvidia's success. However, memory chip manufacturers like Micron face historical challenges in scaling production. Expanding manufacturing capabilities is a lengthy and costly process, and demand often diminishes just as capacity increases, leading to potential oversupply and falling prices. To mitigate such risks, Micron has proactively secured a series of long-term supply agreements with prominent clients, including Nvidia and AI research firm Anthropic. The company disclosed that it has established 16 strategic customer agreements across various sectors, including data centers, consumer electronics, and automotive markets. This strategy is expected to significantly alter its business model. Analysts are optimistic about Micron's future, noting that demand is likely to exceed the pace at which new manufacturing facilities can be established. William Blair tech analyst Sebastien Naji remarked on the robust growth potential, reiterating an ‘Outperform’ rating based on the increasing demand and Micron’s expanding long-term agreements. Whether Micron can maintain its momentum without facing a downturn remains to be seen, but its recent performance indicates that it is a formidable player in the tech landscape.
