Micron Technology continues to experience a remarkable surge in its stock performance, witnessing a 12% increase on Tuesday that propelled its market capitalization beyond the $700 billion mark for the first time. This impressive growth has resulted in a staggering 125% rise in the company's stock this year alone, and an astonishing 700% jump over the past year, positioning Micron among the top ten most valuable technology firms in the United States. The unprecedented demand for memory products has been largely fueled by the AI boom, creating a worldwide shortage that has left chipmakers scrambling to keep up. Key players in the AI sector, such as Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, require significant memory resources to drive their advanced AI processors. Together with SK Hynix and Samsung, Micron dominates the memory market. In a related development, Sandisk, known for its solid-state drives that utilize NAND memory, also saw its stock rise by 12% on Tuesday, marking an approximately sixfold increase in value this year. On the same day, Micron announced the launch of its largest commercially available solid-state drive (SSD). These drives are known for their ability to store more data while consuming less power compared to traditional hard disk drives. Jeremy Werner, Micron's senior vice president for its core data center division, highlighted in a press release that this "breakthrough capacity" provides data center operators with a crucial tool to enhance their total cost of ownership, particularly as power availability becomes a significant constraint for scaling AI infrastructure. Since the onset of the AI frenzy that began in late 2022 with the debut of ChatGPT, memory manufacturers have struggled to satisfy soaring demand. After releasing its second-quarter earnings report in March, Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra informed CNBC that major customers were receiving only "50% to two-thirds of their requirements" due to the ongoing supply challenges.
