Michigan politicians want to ban Chinese-badged cars from even visiting the US

As election season heats up in Michigan, politicians are vying for the support of influential groups, notably the automotive sector. In a bold move, a duo of lawmakers is advocating for a sweeping ban on vehicles bearing Chinese brands, aiming to prevent them not only from sale or import but also from entering the U.S. altogether, even for brief visits from neighboring countries like Canada or Mexico. This initiative is part of a broader trend to safeguard the U.S. auto industry, which garners bipartisan support. In a notable move during his presidency, Joe Biden imposed a 100% import tariff on all vehicles manufactured in China. Additionally, his administration, along with subsequent actions from the Trump administration, established new regulations restricting the import of connected vehicles produced by companies linked to the Chinese government, set to take effect in 2027. While it is possible to obtain special permission under these regulations, as demonstrated by Volvo Cars recently securing approval to import its EX60 model, the current measures are deemed insufficient by Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Representative Haley Stevens (D-Mich.). They are championing the Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act, a proposed legislation that, if enacted, would prohibit connected vehicles designed or manufactured in China, as well as those produced by companies with significant Chinese ownership, from entering the U.S. This bill extends its reach to include adversarial nations such as Russia, reflecting an increasingly stringent stance on automotive imports from foreign entities.
