MI5 warns lawmakers that Chinese spies are trying to reach them via LinkedIn

In a stark warning issued on Tuesday, Britain's domestic intelligence agency, MI5, informed lawmakers that Chinese operatives are actively attempting to recruit them through professional networking sites like LinkedIn. House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle conveyed the message from MI5, highlighting a new 'espionage alert' that reveals these activities are orchestrated by individuals representing the Chinese Ministry of State Security. According to the alert, Chinese nationals are utilizing LinkedIn profiles to reach out to lawmakers at scale, aiming to gather sensitive information and establish long-term relationships. Hoyle noted that the agency identified specific individuals, including Amanda Qiu and Shirly Shen, whose profiles are believed to serve as fronts for espionage efforts. Home Office Minister Dan Jarvis added that the threat extends beyond parliamentary staff, impacting economists, think tank consultants, and various government officials. He described the situation as a covert and calculated attempt by a foreign power to meddle in the UK's sovereign affairs, asserting that the government will not accept such interference. This warning follows a series of escalating alerts from British intelligence regarding espionage risks posed by China, the U.K.'s third-largest trading partner. Recent controversies surrounding the collapse of a prosecution against two men charged with espionage for Beijing have raised further concerns. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Stephen Parkinson, indicated that the case was dropped because the government declined to testify under oath about China's threat to national security during the time of the alleged offenses. In a similar vein, MI5 had previously cautioned lawmakers in January 2022 about a London-based lawyer, Christine Lee, who was reportedly involved in activities that aligned with the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to influence U.K. politics. MI5 Director-General Ken McCallum warned last month that Chinese state actors pose a daily national security threat, engaging in cyber espionage, technology theft, and covert interference in British public life.
