Making games in a war zone:Metro 2039’s Ukrainian developers speak out

After seven years since the breathtaking release of Metro Exodus, the gaming landscape has evolved dramatically, particularly for the talented developers at 4A Studios who are hard at work on the upcoming Metro 2039. In a revealing presentation, the team shared how the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has profoundly influenced their creative direction. "Everything we had envisioned for the next installment transformed in 2020 and was reshaped even further in 2022," they explained. The war has not only impacted their lives but has also shifted the narrative focus of the game towards themes of choices, consequences, and the sacrifices necessary for a hopeful future. Although 4A Studios is now officially based in Malta, its roots trace back to Kyiv, where it was established in 2006. The team consists of members from over 25 countries, yet a significant portion of the developers are Ukrainian. They face numerous challenges daily, including power shortages requiring them to use generators and battery backups, all while seeking shelter from drone attacks during work hours. Despite these interruptions, the developers remain steadfast, stating, "These challenges are trying, but they do not deter us from pursuing what we are passionate about." Their families' support has been crucial, allowing them to concentrate on their work while prioritizing their loved ones' safety. Having grown up in Ukraine during the tumultuous 1990s has instilled in them a sense of resilience. They recognize that aspirations and accomplishments are not given; they must be fought for. Metro 2039 retains its ties to the iconic Metro universe inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels, yet the realities of war have infused the game with a distinctively Ukrainian perspective. "Whereas earlier titles focused on averting conflict, now, war is our present, and the narrative has shifted to reflect its repercussions," noted executive producer Jon Bloch.
