Meta's WhatsApp head to step down, will be replaced by Indian fintech founder Kunal Shah

In a significant leadership shift, Meta has announced that Will Cathcart, the long-serving head of WhatsApp, will be stepping down. Cathcart, who has overseen the messaging service for over seven years, will transition to a new role within Meta, focusing on developing innovative products from the ground up. This change was highlighted in a Facebook post by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who expressed enthusiasm about continuing to collaborate closely with Cathcart. In his own remarks on social media platform X, Cathcart noted that WhatsApp is currently at its strongest point, prompting his decision to step back. Since its acquisition by Meta in 2014 for $19 billion, WhatsApp has evolved into one of the world’s leading messaging platforms, boasting an impressive user base of over 3 billion monthly active users. Recently, Meta has been diversifying its revenue streams by rolling out subscription plans for WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, while also exploring subscriptions for its artificial intelligence services. These initiatives aim to reduce reliance on ad sales and recover costs associated with substantial investments in AI technology. Kunal Shah, the founder of the Indian fintech company Cred, will succeed Cathcart. Established in 2018, Cred is a platform that incentivizes timely credit card payments. Zuckerberg praised Shah, citing his 'builder mentality and global perspective' as key attributes that make him well-suited to lead WhatsApp. In conjunction with Shah's appointment, Meta is making a substantial investment of $900 million in Cred, which has recently achieved a post-money valuation of $4.5 billion.
