Meta’s $14.99 promise questioned as verified accounts get suspended

Meta Platforms is facing significant scrutiny as numerous users of Facebook and Instagram report being unexpectedly locked out of their accounts, including those subscribed to the premium Meta Verified service. Despite paying $14.99 per month in the U.S. (approximately Rs. 1,300) and Rs. 699 in India for promised benefits like direct support, many users are met with silence and automated responses that provide little assistance. A recent report by TechCrunch has unveiled the growing discontent among Meta Verified subscribers, who are encountering abrupt account suspensions without any clear explanations or avenues for resolution. This issue seems to be extensive, impacting not only individual profiles but also Facebook Groups, business pages, and valuable messaging histories. While Meta Verified is marketed as offering enhanced visibility and personalized support, users argue that these promises fall flat in real-world application. Many describe their experiences with customer support as “useless,” citing the absence of human assistance and the frustrating redirection to malfunctioning web pages for appeals. The report suggests that Meta has offered a vague apology regarding issues related to Instagram and has attributed bans on Facebook Groups to a “technical error.” The underlying concern appears to stem from the company’s AI-driven moderation systems. Observers and users suspect that overly aggressive algorithms are mistakenly flagging legitimate content as violations, resulting in unjust account removals. The repercussions of these actions have been particularly dire for small businesses and content creators who depend on Meta's platforms for outreach and communication. Reports indicate that some users have lost years’ worth of personal messages, content, and client interactions. As demands for accountability rise, a Change.org petition calling for Meta to revise its AI moderation tools and to restore locked accounts has already amassed over 25,000 signatures.
