Several Meta employees have started calling themselves 'AI builders'

In a notable shift within Meta, some employees have begun to identify as 'AI builders,' highlighting a transformative moment in how software development roles are perceived and executed. This emerging trend signals that AI coding tools are redefining traditional job boundaries at the tech giant. Jeremie Guedj, a long-time product manager at Meta, shared his new title on LinkedIn, stating, "As of today, my full-time job at Meta is AI Builder." Although his official title remains product manager in the company’s systems, Guedj emphasizes that his work now revolves around creating with AI as part of what he describes as an 'AI-native team.' The movement towards this new designation reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision expressed during the latest earnings call, where he outlined expectations for AI tools to significantly alter workflows by 2026. Zuckerberg noted that AI coding tools enable individuals with minimal technical skills to construct applications, thus reshaping the dynamics of productivity within teams. He remarked, "We're elevating individual contributors and flattening teams, allowing projects that once required large teams to be completed by just one highly skilled individual." In an environment where collaboration between humans and AI is becoming more seamless, Guedj articulated that his team is designed to be fundamentally 'AI-friendly.' The term 'AI builder' has not yet been formalized within Meta’s structure, but it resonates with a broader shift where product managers are increasingly adopting technical roles, even as some employees express that this label is still experimental. The trend is not limited to Meta; other tech companies are also adapting. For instance, LinkedIn recently transitioned its associate product manager program to an associate product builder track, aiming to cultivate versatile talents who can code, design, and manage products effectively. This reflects a growing recognition that role definitions need to evolve to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. As the industry continues to navigate these changes, the blending of roles appears to be a common theme. Guedj captures the spirit of this evolution, stating, "Building has always been my passion. AI has empowered me to transform concepts into functioning applications. That has changed everything for me." As these transformations unfold, the tech landscape will watch closely as organizations like Meta and LinkedIn redefine what it means to build in the age of AI.
