Initially, Meta had intended to debut Name Tag at a conference aimed at visually impaired individuals before making it publicly available. But those plans were scrapped. Internal documents suggest that Meta views the current politically charged climate in the United States as a strategic opportunity to launch this feature, asserting that civil society groups likely to criticize the rollout might have their focus diverted to other pressing issues. Interestingly, Meta had considered implementing facial recognition in its initial Ray-Ban smart glasses back in 2021. However, concerns regarding technical feasibility and ethical implications led to a retraction of those plans.
