At a recent product launch event, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, faced an unexpected challenge as the company's new Ray-Ban smart glasses struggled to perform as intended. This incident occurred during the Connect Developers Conference held at Meta's headquarters in Menlo Park on September 17. The event aimed to showcase the enhanced features of the smart glasses, which include a built-in display and a gesture-sensitive wristband designed for seamless interaction. However, during a live demonstration with food creator Jack Mancuso, the AI assistant embedded in the glasses faltered when asked for a recipe. Instead of delivering clear, sequential instructions, the AI provided confusing directions, leading to frustration. Mancuso attempted to guide the AI back on track, but ultimately pointed to poor Wi-Fi connectivity as the source of the issues. Mark Zuckerberg, who took the stage to address the audience, echoed this sentiment, humorously lamenting that despite years of technological development, a problematic Wi-Fi connection can undermine the experience. "The irony of all this whole thing is that you spend years making technology and then the Wi-Fi on the day kinda… catches you," he remarked, eliciting laughter from the audience. The demonstration did not improve when Zuckerberg showcased the neural wristband, which is meant to interpret subtle hand gestures for various tasks. While he successfully sent a message to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, the system failed to register Bosworth's return call, leading to further complications. Zuckerberg expressed his disappointment, saying, "You practice these things like 100 times, and then, you never know what’s going to happen." As the situation escalated, Bosworth had to come on stage to assist, with both executives attributing the mishaps to the unreliable Wi-Fi. The event highlighted the challenges of live tech demonstrations and the critical role of stable connectivity in showcasing new innovations.
