Meta's recent decision to prioritize artificial intelligence and smart glasses over virtual reality has sent ripples of concern throughout the VR industry. Jessica Young, a VR content creator known for her work in Horizon Worlds, expressed that the current atmosphere feels like a 'VR winter.' Last week, Meta announced it would lay off around 10% of its Reality Labs workforce, significantly affecting teams involved in VR projects like the Quest headsets. Reports indicate that roughly 1,000 positions were cut, with many projects facing reduced support and some studios closing down. This strategic pivot aims to refocus investments toward AI technologies and wearable devices such as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, co-developed with EssilorLuxottica. The reduction in VR funding is striking, given Meta's instrumental role in the sector's growth following its $2 billion acquisition of Oculus in 2014. The company, which rebranded from Facebook to Meta, has emphasized its commitment to building a metaverse. However, with Reality Labs recording over $70 billion in losses since late 2020, CEO Mark Zuckerberg's recent shift in focus has left many developers anxious about the future of VR. Although Meta has historically unveiled new Quest headsets at its annual Connect conference, the 2025 event saw a notable absence of VR hardware announcements. Instead, the company introduced its $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, which feature a singular digital screen, adding to the feeling of stagnation in the VR space. Young pointed out that without new headset releases, the platform risks feeling outdated. Despite concerns, Andrew Bosworth, Meta's tech chief, reassured that the company remains committed to investing in VR, albeit with a more measured approach. He acknowledged the slower-than-expected growth in the VR market and emphasized the need for appropriately sized investments. Additionally, Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Oculus, indicated that despite the layoffs, Meta still has the largest VR development team by a significant margin. Market research from IDC suggests a transformation in the Extended Reality (XR) segment, which includes both VR and mixed-reality headsets. While the XR market is projected to see overall growth, shipments of VR and mixed-reality devices are anticipated to decline sharply. The rise of AI-powered smart glasses and other innovative devices appears to be overshadowing traditional VR headsets, which may only appeal to a niche audience. Industry analysts, such as Jitesh Ubrani from IDC, have noted that mainstream consumers are reluctant to adopt bulky VR headsets for extended periods, a trend that contrasts sharply with earlier expectations. Andrew Eiche, CEO of Owlchemy Labs, remarked that the VR market resembles the early days of gaming consoles rather than a breakthrough like smartphones, suggesting a long road ahead for VR's resurgence. Meta's recent layoffs reflect broader challenges within the gaming industry, as many studios face difficulties amid a market slump. The Quest headset remains a key player in VR, but its app store dynamics could shift dramatically if Meta continues to scale back its support for third-party developers. Eiche voiced concerns about the dependence on Meta, stating that any reduction in their backing could have a cascading effect on the entire VR ecosystem. Amidst these shifts, the anticipated release of new products like Valve's Steam Frame wireless VR headset and Samsung's Galaxy XR may help revive interest in the market. However, Apple's Vision Pro has not significantly impacted the consumer landscape, despite its success in enterprise sales. As Meta adjusts its focus, the future of Horizon Worlds is uncertain. Young intends to continue creating experiences on the platform, despite her concerns over its mobile-centric direction. She reminisced about the platform's earlier days, which provided a vital social outlet during the pandemic. Young lamented the current narrative surrounding Horizon, arguing that it fails to capture the platform's initial potential and community spirit.
