Meta's stock heads for best week since early 2024 as optimism builds around AI strategy

Meta's stock experienced a notable uptick on Friday, with shares climbing 15% for the week, marking the company's strongest weekly performance since early 2024. This surge is largely fueled by growing enthusiasm surrounding CEO Mark Zuckerberg's ambitious artificial intelligence initiatives. Just three months after the debut of Muse Spark, Meta's first proprietary AI model, the company made headlines with two significant announcements this week. On Tuesday, they introduced Muse Image, a cutting-edge AI model designed for image creation, aimed at attracting both creators and advertisers to its platform. Then, on Thursday, the firm unveiled Muse Spark 1.1, which is tailored for executing agentic and coding tasks. These developments signal Meta's determination to establish a competitive presence in the AI landscape against established players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Moreover, these announcements highlight Meta's strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond advertising. They also reflect advancements at the Meta Superintelligence Labs, spearheaded by Alexandr Wang. Following this week’s stock rally, Meta has managed to recover its losses for the year, now showing an increase of over 2%, though it still lags behind the Nasdaq, which has risen by 13%. Additionally, Meta's stock received a boost from reports indicating progress in developing custom in-house AI chips, first mentioned in March as part of its data center expansion. The company anticipates starting production of its inaugural chip, codenamed Iris, in September, as part of an ambitious goal to achieve 14 gigawatts of computing power by next year. Analyst Justin Post from Bank of America noted that Meta may have implemented substantial cost-saving measures to significantly reduce capacity costs, surpassing expectations from both analysts and investors.
