Meta’s Reality Labs posts $4.53 billion loss in second quarter

Meta's Reality Labs, the division dedicated to developing the future of the metaverse, continues to struggle financially. In the latest earnings report, the tech giant disclosed an operating loss of $4.53 billion for the second quarter, despite generating $370 million in revenue during the same timeframe. Analysts had anticipated an even larger loss of $4.99 billion, with projected sales slightly higher at $381 million. Reality Labs is responsible for products like the Quest series of virtual reality headsets and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, created in collaboration with eyewear leader EssilorLuxottica. With a vision to innovate, Meta aims for Reality Labs to produce groundbreaking technologies, including the highly anticipated Orion augmented reality glasses, which could revolutionize immersive computing. However, this ambitious pursuit comes at a steep cost, as Reality Labs has amassed nearly $70 billion in losses since the end of 2020. In comparison, earlier this year, Reality Labs reported a loss of $4.2 billion in the first quarter, accompanied by $412 million in sales. While the Quest VR headsets have not yet reached massive popularity, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are experiencing a positive trend, with sales reportedly tripling year-over-year in the first half of 2025. In addition to these developments, Meta and EssilorLuxottica recently launched the Oakley Meta smart glasses, further expanding their partnership. Amid these financial challenges, Meta also announced layoffs affecting some employees within the Oculus Studios VR and AR software teams earlier this year. The company continues to push forward with ambitious plans in artificial intelligence and immersive technology.
