Meta's product managers are vibe coding prototype apps and showing them to Mark Zuckerberg

In a bold move to expedite app development, Meta's product managers are taking matters into their own hands by employing a method known as 'vibe coding.' This approach allows them to create prototype applications without waiting for engineers, showcasing these innovations directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. During the TechEquity AI Summit held in Sunnyvale, California, Joseph Spisak, a product director at Meta's Superintelligence Labs, shared insights into this rapid development process. He explained, "PMs are actually vibe coding products, and we're showing them to Zuck and leadership, enabling us to iterate and explore the space really fast." Vibe coding, a term commonly used in developer circles, involves utilizing AI to assist in coding through natural language instructions. Spisak highlighted the efficiency of this method, stating, "We can literally vibe code products in a matter of hours, days, and explore the space." Meta's internal systems are designed to empower non-engineers to make modifications on the fly, allowing for real-time adjustments to app interfaces. This innovative approach reflects a significant shift in Silicon Valley, where companies are increasingly reorienting their product development strategies around AI. The company employs at least two AI tools: Metamate, an internal chatbot modeled after ChatGPT, and Devmate, a coding assistant that utilizes multiple large language models to enhance programming speed. The focus on rapid development and vibe coding has become a priority at the Superintelligence Labs, which was established in June to keep pace with competing AI firms. A recent internal memo indicated that Meta's existing systems, which cater to billions of users and large engineering teams, are too slow for the dynamic needs of smaller, agile AI teams. Similar changes are taking place across the tech landscape, with Google urging its employees to incorporate AI into all phases of product development. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, over a quarter of the company's code is now generated by AI before human review. At Microsoft, the message from leadership is clear: utilizing AI is essential. Meta is making significant strides in this area as well, monitoring employee AI usage and setting adoption goals. They even have a game called Level Up to incentivize staff to reach AI-related milestones. The demand for vibe coding skills is becoming a key recruitment criterion in the tech industry, with companies like Reddit and DoorDash seeking candidates familiar with AI coding tools. Spisak noted that the barriers to entry for vibe coding are decreasing, mentioning that even his young daughter is capable of vibe coding in Roblox. He encouraged product managers to embrace this hands-on approach: "Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty."
