Meta is reportedly reaching out to a select group of Facebook users, requesting access to their smartphone media to enhance the personalized experience of Stories. This move, as reported by TechCrunch, aims to allow the platform to provide tailored suggestions powered by AI, including collages and occasion-specific posts like birthday and anniversary highlights. The prompt that users have encountered indicates that Meta intends to continuously upload and analyze photos and videos from users' camera rolls to its cloud servers. By leveraging information such as time, location, and themes, the company claims it can generate unique content recommendations. The message seen by users states, “To create ideas for you, we'll select media from your camera roll and upload it to our cloud on an ongoing basis.” However, this request for access has sparked concerns about user privacy and data handling. Meta maintains that participation in this feature is entirely optional, assuring users that any generated suggestions will remain private unless they choose to share them. The company has also emphasized that uploaded content will not be utilized for advertising purposes or shared with third parties. Despite these reassurances, the details in the fine print have caught the attention of privacy advocates. By consenting to the terms, users permit Meta AI to analyze their images, which includes examining facial features and identifying objects. Additionally, the company collects metadata, such as the date the images were taken and information about people or elements depicted in those files. A Meta spokesperson informed The Verge that this initiative is currently in a limited testing phase. Public Affairs Manager Ryan Daniels confirmed that unpublished content from users’ devices would not contribute to training AI models. Communications Manager Maria Cubeta noted that while camera roll media might help improve suggestion accuracy, it would not be used to enhance Meta's broader AI functionalities.
