Meta faces backlash over AI tool that creates images using public Instagram profile pictures

Meta is facing significant backlash following the launch of its latest AI image-generation feature, which enables users to create images utilizing public Instagram profile pictures. This development has raised serious alarms among privacy advocates and tech experts alike, who fear that the tool could be exploited to produce altered images of individuals without their consent, igniting renewed discussions around consent, privacy, and the ethical implications of AI technology. Known as Muse Image, the feature is available through the Meta AI app, web browsers, WhatsApp, and Instagram Stories for users in the United States. Similar to other text-to-image AI applications, Muse Image can generate visuals based on straightforward text prompts. What distinguishes it, however, is its capability to integrate publicly accessible Instagram profile images into the finished products. The introduction of this feature has been met with harsh criticism from digital rights organizations. They argue that it poses a risk by enabling the creation of manipulated images without explicit permission from the individuals depicted. Donald Campbell, Advocacy Director at the technology justice non-profit Foxglove, expressed concerns to BBC News, calling the feature "an obvious recipe for disaster." He highlighted the troubling history of non-consensual AI-generated images proliferating on social media over the past year, questioning why Meta would choose to implement a feature that exacerbates this issue. Privacy International, another advocacy group, echoed these concerns, stating that Muse Image reflects a disturbing trend in the AI industry of treating personal data and imagery as mere resources for training and generating content. As governments globally scrutinize the potential dangers of AI-generated images, this feature is likely to draw regulatory scrutiny. For instance, in the UK, media watchdog Ofcom is already investigating X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, regarding its AI chatbot Grok's involvement in creating and distributing non-consensual AI-generated images of real people. Social media users have voiced their apprehensions online, warning that allowing AI to repurpose public profile photos could lead to identity theft and deepfake manipulations. In response to the criticism, Meta has defended Muse Image, asserting that users retain control over their public content's usage for AI-generated creations. According to the company, individuals can opt out via a specific setting that is distinct from their overall privacy controls. Instagram users can navigate to Settings > Sharing and Reuse to disable the option labeled "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta." This setting encompasses posts and reels, even for accounts that remain public. Meta claims that Muse Image utilizes advanced AI reasoning combined with multiple images to produce high-quality visuals based on user prompts. Users can also choose from preset styles, edit images through sketches, and either download or share the AI-generated outputs. While the feature is available for free for general use, Meta offers paid plans for users needing higher usage limits. The company intends to extend Muse Image to Facebook and Messenger soon and is reportedly working on an AI-powered video generation version, indicating a broader commitment to generative AI across its platforms.
