Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to change the way users experience personalized content and advertisements through its AI technology. Starting December 16, interactions with Meta AI will directly influence the ads users see, and notably, there will be no option to opt out of this feature. Users will be informed of this significant update on October 7, although the initial notification may not clearly indicate that AI interactions are at the heart of these changes. The notice will simply state, "Learn how Meta will use your info in new ways to personalize your experience." It requires users to click through for a more detailed explanation, which reveals that their interactions with AI will play a role in tailoring their overall experience. Meta's spokesperson, Emil Vazquez, defended the company’s communication strategy, asserting that it is not designed to obscure the update. He emphasized that notifications sent to users clarify that the changes are related to AI, highlighting that clicking on the alert provides immediate insight into the nature of the update. The tech giant reports that over 1 billion people engage with Meta AI monthly, with the aim of enhancing user experiences across its platforms. However, users should be aware that while sensitive topics discussed with Meta AI—such as religion, health, and political beliefs—will not be used for ad targeting, the broader interactions will. Meta reassured users that they retain control over their interactions with AI. They can unlink accounts across various apps and adjust ad settings. Nevertheless, once the AI tracking begins in December, opting out of targeted ads based on AI chats will not be possible, marking a significant shift in how personalized advertising is approached on Meta's platforms.
