I asked Meta's new Muse Spark AI to judge my lunch and give me recipes for dinner, and it mostly delivered

In the quest to simplify meal preparation, many find themselves overwhelmed by the challenge of creating nutritious dishes from whatever ingredients are left in the fridge. Acknowledging this struggle, I decided to put Meta's newly launched Muse Spark AI to the test, seeking its assistance with my lunch evaluation and dinner planning. Launched on April 8, Muse Spark is positioned as a personal AI assistant designed to enhance health tracking and meal suggestions. Meta touts the tool's development as a collaboration with health professionals, aiming to provide reliable insights into dietary choices. Eager to see its capabilities, I chose to skip traditional queries and instead focused on my lunchtime meal. I indulged in a favorite from a local Japanese bento restaurant, featuring seared salmon over rice, a soft-boiled egg, mixed greens, and a side of raw salmon with fish roe. After snapping a picture of my meal, I prompted Muse Spark to analyze the dish, breaking down its components, estimating calorie counts, and assessing its nutritional value based on my biometrics. The AI delivered an impressive analysis, estimating my salmon bento at approximately 760 calories. While it acknowledged its limitations in determining exact ingredient weights and types, it highlighted the meal's richness in omega-3 fatty acids while pointing out deficiencies in fiber, vitamin C, and calcium. Muse Spark rated my lunch a solid 7.5 out of 10, reminding me of its non-professional status in nutrition advice. However, the tool stumbled with generating a labeled image of my meal, producing confusing text that was difficult to decipher. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get a clearer output, I shifted my focus to dinner. Armed with a variety of leftover ingredients, I provided Muse Spark with a photo and outlined my preferences for quick and easy recipes. The AI responded with a trio of dinner suggestions, designed to compensate for the nutrients my lunch lacked. It also highlighted the importance of managing sodium intake, especially cautioning against the excessive use of soy sauce. Although Muse Spark mistakenly identified freeze-dried strawberries as a healthy option without noting their sugary yogurt coating, it did inspire me to creatively utilize my leftover ingredients, including a half papaya. Ultimately, I settled on preparing an oyakodon for dinner, saving the other recipes for future culinary adventures. While I might not abandon my love for soy sauce, I appreciated the guidance Muse Spark provided as I navigated my cooking choices.
