Meta says it's expanding the Louisiana AI data center that helped fuel $50K teacher bonuses

Meta is significantly expanding its Louisiana data center, known as Hyperion, which is set to become the largest AI facility of its kind for the tech giant. In a recent announcement, Meta revealed that the site in Richland Parish will increase its compute capacity to an impressive 5 gigawatts, pushing the total investment in the project beyond $50 billion. The impact of this expansion is already being felt in the local community. Meta highlighted that the increased tax revenues generated by the data center have enabled the local school district to provide substantial year-end bonuses to teachers—up to $50,000 each. This amount marks a staggering 400% increase compared to last year's bonuses in a parish with a population of around 20,000. Sheldon Jones, the superintendent of the Richland Parish school district, remarked that this financial boost has been transformative for educators and their families, making Richland Parish a hub for both education and industry. In addition to enhancing teacher compensation, Meta's Hyperion project has facilitated over $1.6 billion in contracts for local businesses since construction began in December 2024. The company is committed to further investing over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, which will enhance roads, water, and wastewater systems. Notably, Meta ensures that it covers all costs associated with energy and water usage at the data center, alleviating the financial burden on local consumers. The expansion of Hyperion marks a significant upgrade from previous estimates, as Meta and investment firm Blue Owl had initially projected costs at about $27 billion for a lesser 2-gigawatt capacity. Once operational, the data center is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs. However, while Meta emphasizes the economic advantages of the project, the rapid growth of AI data centers has sparked concerns over their environmental impact, particularly regarding energy consumption and local infrastructure demands.
