Here’s what it’s like to use Meta’s new Ray-Ban Display glasses

Imagine being able to discreetly check your messages while at the movies or effortlessly find directions without fumbling with your phone. Meta's new Ray-Ban Display smart glasses aim to make these scenarios a reality with their integrated display technology. Unveiled at the Connect event in Menlo Park, California, these glasses mark Meta’s latest venture into the realm of augmented reality, alongside updates to their audio-only smart frames. During the event, demonstrations showcased how the glasses can transform the way we interact with our devices. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the unique potential of glasses, stating, "Glasses are the only form factor where you can let AI see what you see, hear what you hear, and talk to you throughout the day." He noted that the adoption rate of smart glasses is rising rapidly, akin to some of the most beloved consumer electronics in history. However, the question remains: Are consumers willing to invest $799 in these smart spectacles? Unlike earlier versions that only provided audio feedback, the new Displays offer visual interaction through a small screen located within the right lens. This display appears to float just beyond the wearer's immediate view, allowing for quick glances without losing focus on the surrounding environment. If desired, users can also turn the display off to avoid distractions during conversations. One notable feature is the accompanying 'neural' wristband, which enables users to navigate the display using subtle hand gestures, eliminating the need to vocalize commands. Although slightly bulkier than standard glasses, many users may find them easy to forget while not engaged with the technology. The functionalities of the Display glasses are extensive, allowing users to take photos, respond to messages, browse social media, and even make video calls—all at the glance of the eye. The real-time mapping feature stands out as particularly useful, providing directions without the need to consult a phone. Additionally, the glasses offer live captions and translations during conversations, enhancing communication. Despite their impressive capabilities, there are still areas for improvement. For instance, the glasses misinterpreted a dictated text response during testing, and glitches were observed during a demo call with Zuckerberg. The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses represent a significant advancement in smart eyewear, building on concepts introduced by earlier devices like Google Glass. However, consumer acceptance remains uncertain, especially in a culture increasingly wary of screen time. Meta's leadership claims their goal is to cultivate a more mindful interaction with technology. They aim to promote a glanceable display that provides information without overwhelming users. Security and privacy are also paramount concerns, as the glasses come equipped with cameras and microphones. An LED indicator signals when the device is recording, but questions linger about the comfort level of those around users of such technology. Past experiences with Google Glass wearers have shown that public perception can be critical. The Meta Ray-Ban Displays are set to launch on September 30 in select U.S. stores, with a broader rollout planned for next year. As the landscape of augmented reality continues to evolve, only time will tell if these smart glasses will find a place in everyday life.
