Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Meta's Chief Technology Officer and one of the company's original engineers, has shared his insights on the future of augmented and virtual reality. In a recent memo, he suggested that 2025 might mark a significant turning point for Reality Labs, the segment dedicated to these technologies. However, he also warned it could end up being remembered as a major setback for the metaverse. In an interview with Bloomberg Technology, Boz expressed optimism about the potential of Reality Labs, stating, "We’ll judge at the end of the decade, but this does feel like the pivotal year." He highlighted the success of Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses, revealing that over 2 million pairs have been sold since their launch in October 2023, surpassing traditional Ray-Bans even before the introduction of AI features. Boz noted that the landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with companies like Google collaborating with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop smart glasses powered by Android XR, and Apple aiming to unveil its own smart glasses by 2026. He remarked, "Suddenly, we go from toiling in the realms of obscurity to being very much in the world with a product that is very attractive to consumers, and thus competitors." Despite this competitive environment, Boz emphasized that the market's acceptance of Meta's AR and VR products is crucial for the industry’s growth. He pointed out, "The market is actually, especially when it comes to hardware, a trailing indicator. So you look for early indicators. To some degree, you do have to have a level of confidence and taste in-house." Drawing on lessons learned from former COO Sheryl Sandberg, Bosworth stressed that many companies fail not due to competition but because they do not effectively execute their own strategies. He stated, "What we’ll know by the end of the year is whether we executed on our plan or not. What we’ll know in five years' time is whether that was enough." With ambitious plans in place, Meta is gearing up for a transformative year in the realm of augmented and virtual reality.
