Meta is tracking employee keystrokes on Google, LinkedIn, Wikipedia as part of AI training project

Meta has initiated a new project that involves tracking employee keystrokes and mouse movements on various platforms, including Google, LinkedIn, and Wikipedia, as part of its efforts to enhance its artificial intelligence models. This initiative, known as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), has raised significant privacy concerns among staff members, as revealed in internal communications reviewed by CNBC. The MCI tool aims to collect data from employee interactions on their work computers, and the list of monitored sites also includes Microsoft’s GitHub, Salesforce's Slack, and other platforms. Notably, Meta's own applications, such as Threads and Manus, are part of this tracking endeavor. The project was initially met with resistance, especially after a memo circulated within Meta's Superintelligence Labs (MSL) aimed to address concerns regarding employee surveillance. CEO Mark Zuckerberg's aggressive strategy to advance in generative AI has driven this data collection project, particularly as Meta seeks to catch up to competitors like OpenAI and Google. Since last summer, Zuckerberg has made significant hires, including Alexandr Wang from Scale AI, to bolster the company's AI capabilities. The recent unveiling of the Muse Spark model marks a significant milestone in Meta's AI development journey. A Meta spokesperson acknowledged the MCI initiative but refrained from commenting on the specifics of the monitored platforms. The spokesperson emphasized that capturing user interactions is essential for training AI agents that assist with everyday tasks, claiming that the company has implemented safeguards to protect sensitive information. Despite these assurances, many employees have described the tracking project as 'dystopian,' expressing fears that it could inadvertently expose sensitive data, including personal information and passwords. The MSL representative reassured staff that the tool is designed to respect privacy by only capturing on-screen content, excluding files and attachments. Employees were advised to avoid personal tasks on work devices to mitigate any potential privacy risks. As Meta continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, the tension between innovation and employee privacy remains a critical concern, prompting ongoing discussions about corporate surveillance practices in the tech industry.
