Meta pops 8% as company makes cloud push to sell excess AI compute power capacity

Meta's shares surged by 8% on Wednesday following the announcement of its new cloud business initiative aimed at monetizing excess AI computing power. The company is set to offer this surplus capacity to external clients, as confirmed by CNBC, with initial reports originating from Bloomberg. The tech giant is currently deliberating whether to provide access to AI models hosted on its systems or simply to sell raw computing power. This strategic move comes in a time when demand for computing resources has skyrocketed, largely fueled by the AI boom ignited by OpenAI's introduction of ChatGPT in 2022. In an effort to meet this growing demand, Meta has committed to a substantial capital expenditure of up to $145 billion this year, focusing on the development of data centers and acquiring the necessary graphics processing units (GPUs) for training AI models and managing extensive workloads. By establishing a cloud service, Meta aims to generate revenue from unused capacity, which could alleviate investor concerns regarding the company's hefty financial outlays. Entering this competitive landscape, Meta will face off against established players such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and CoreWeave. Notably, the company is following in the footsteps of SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, which has recently ventured into selling its own excess computing capacity. Meta's cloud strategy is underscored by significant partnerships, including agreements with Anthropic, which is set to pay $1.25 billion monthly for computing resources, and Google, with a $920 million monthly deal. Despite investing $14 billion to recruit Alexandr Wang from Scale AI, Meta has been striving to solidify its position in the AI sector. Under Wang's guidance, the company launched its first model, Muse Spark, in April, branding it as a robust foundation rather than a leading-edge offering.
